State investigating fatal police shooting along I-35 in Pine County

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a fatal police shooting Friday in Pine County.

The BCA said the shooting happened Friday afternoon on Interstate 35 near the Mora exit after a police pursuit. Pine County sheriff’s deputies were responding to a 911 call from a victim of an alleged domestic incident at the Grand Casino Hinckley when they saw the suspect’s vehicle and began a chase.

The BCA said the suspect drove south in the northbound lanes of I-35 before stopping. During the subsequent encounter with law enforcement, one of the deputies fired a weapon, hitting the suspect. The suspect’s vehicle rolled forward, crashing into an oncoming vehicle, before stopping in the median.

Deputies provided medical assistance but the suspect died at the scene, the BCA said. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously hurt, and no officers were injured.

The victim of the alleged domestic incident also was uninjured.

The BCA said it will evaluate both body camera and squad camera footage of the incident.
