Minneapolis Park Police say a runner collapsed and died during Sunday’s City of Lakes Half Marathon.
Authorities said the runner who collapsed was a 27-year-old man. He was treated by first responders before being transported to a hospital. Further details on what happened were not immediately available.
The annual half-marathon takes more than a thousand runners on a course around Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.
In a statement, race organizers from Run Minnesota offered condolences.
“On a day meant to be a celebration, a family lost a loved one. Our hearts go out to the runner's family and all those who were close to them,” the statement said.
Race officials also thanked the first responders and medical professionals who provided medical care and expressed gratitude to the participants on the course who helped.
