The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating a fatal shooting that happened Monday night as law enforcement officers tried to arrest a man in central Minnesota.
The man who was being arrested, following a reported domestic assault in Paynesville, died in the shooting.
The BCA said Tuesday morning that its investigators were at the scene of the incident.
Paynesville police called the incident an “officer-involved shooting,” but told KARE 11 on Tuesday that it was not clear whether officers or the person who died fired the fatal shot.

According to an account from Paynesville police, officers were called to the home on Stearns Avenue just after 9 p.m. Monday. A woman who was able to leave the home said she had been assaulted by a man — reportedly armed — who remained inside. Police said the woman had minor injuries to her head and neck.
Officers from Paynesville and Cold Spring, and deputies with the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene and determined the man was locked in the basement.
Officers entered the home “and attempted to make verbal contact with the male,” Paynesville police said in a news release. “Officers attempted to get the male to come to the basement stairs with his hands visible.”
As those officers attempted to arrest the man, shots were fired. The man died from his injuries.
A gun was recovered at the scene. There is body-camera footage of the incident.
