Man shot, wounded by police officers in Brooklyn Center

Authorities said the man had exited a home with a chainsaw

Police officers shot and wounded a man after responding to a domestic disturbance call late Wednesday night in Brooklyn Center.

Authorities said the man who was shot had exited the home with a chainsaw. He was reported in stable condition at a hospital on Thursday morning.

The man’s name has not been released. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.

According to a police account of what happened:

At about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to two calls reporting a domestic disturbance at a home on 63rd Avenue North, between Beard and Xerxes avenues. One of the callers reported that a person in the home was armed with knives.

Officers from multiple agencies — including crisis negotiators — responded to the scene.

At some point later, a man was told he was under arrest and reportedly exited the home with a chainsaw.

“While trying to arrest and control the male, officers used pepper balls, 40mm less lethal, and ultimately Brooklyn Center police officers discharged their firearms,” police said in a news release early Thursday.

The man was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital.

Authorities said a chainsaw was recovered at the scene. Neighbors told KARE 11 that they heard gunshots and a running chainsaw.

There were no reports of other injuries in the incident.

The officers involved have been placed on standard critical incident leave. Brooklyn Center police said there’s no ongoing danger to the public.
