St. Paul fire officials said a man was rescued Tuesday after reportedly being trapped in an underground vault for several days.
The rescue happened at about 11 a.m. near the corner of University Avenue and Lafayette Road. Fire and rescue crews found the man 10 to 12 feet below ground in what officials said was a utility vault.
The fire department’s Advanced Technical Rescue Team “set up a rope rescue system, lowered a rescuer down to the patient, then successfully raised them both up to the street level,” fire officials said in a news release.
The man was reported to be conscious, alert and in stable condition.
Authorities said the man reported falling into the vault — which may have had a tampered cover — while walking in the area on the Fourth of July. A passerby heard him calling for help on Tuesday and called 911.
