Democrat Xp Lee and Republican Ruth Bittner are running for the 34B special general election. A special election is being held Sept. 16 to fill the seat that became vacant after Melissa Hortman was shot and killed in June.

Why are you running?
This is a defining moment for Minnesota. From climate change and housing costs to public safety and economic opportunity, we need bold, compassionate leadership that reflects our values and delivers for our communities. I’m running to ensure everyone—no matter their zip code, background, or income—has a fair shot at a good life. I'm proudly endorsed by DFL Veterans, MAPE, State Senator John Hoffman, MN AG Keith Ellison, and many others. Together, we can keep Minnesota moving Forward Stronger.
What life or professional experiences led you to seek this position?
I’m a proud Brooklyn Park resident, a refugee immigrant, and the proud son of working-class parents who came to this country in search of freedom and opportunity. Raised on public assistance and educated in our public schools, I know firsthand the struggles and hopes of the Minnesota families I seek to represent—because I’ve lived them. The programs that helped my family thrive—free school meals, affordable housing, and access to healthcare— these social services are the reason I’m here today.

What are the top issues you're discussing with voters and why?
Health Care: Expanding MinnesotaCare, lowering prescription drug costs, mental health services, long-term care and treating health care as a human right.
Education: Fully funded public schools, early learning, and strong curriculum that reflects and equips all students for success in today's modern society.
Economic Growth: Support for small businesses, workforce training programs, and pathways to union jobs and family-supporting careers—especially for Brooklyn Park, Champlin, and Coon Rapids.

Why are you running?
I am eager to be a voice for my district because I want the people in my community to thrive. I love the State of Minnesota and I want to see our state flourish. I want to foster discussion. I would like to arrive at solutions by working together. If we recognize what we have in common, we can work together successfully. I will work hard and strive for understanding. I will put in the time to understand issues at a deeper level so I can make quality decisions even if the issues are complex.
What life or professional experiences led you to seek this position?
I attended the University of Minnesota where I earned a B.S. degree in Food Science. I worked as a food scientist at Land O'Lakes, Inc. I eventually started my own business and later began my career as a real estate agent. All of these professional experiences prepared me for the work as a legislator. I am a skilled researcher and project manager, I understand business as an entrepreneur, and I have the ability to negotiate and get things done. I am able to forge relationships and build trust.
What are the top issues you're discussing with voters and why?
I am very concerned about eliminating fraud and waste in our state government and would like to see our state operating in a fiscally responsible way. I want to work towards safer communities by ensuring our local police forces have all of the resources they need to protect us and themselves. Educational excellence is foundational to the success of our students and our communities. I want to prioritize student success in our schools and thereby prepare students for their future success.
