Fifteen people file to run in Minneapolis mayor's race

Candidate filings for municipal elections across the state closed earlier this week. Voters in Minneapolis will have multiple candidates to choose from as they select the next mayor and cast ballots for members of all 13 council seats.

Fifteen candidates, including current mayor Jacob Frey, have met the filing deadline to run for mayor of Minneapolis. Frey is running for his third term as the head of the state's most populous city.

The mayoral filings also include state Sen. Omar Fateh, the democratic-socialist who beat out Frey last month to win the endorsement of the Minneapolis Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. It was the first time in more than 15 years that the party agreed on an endorsement in the mayoral race. However, Frey’s campaign announced it was challenging the results calling the process, “flawed and irregular.”

The campaign’s challenge is expected to come before an upcoming Minneapolis DFL meeting.

There will be at least three new city council members next year as Jeremiah Ellison (Ward 5), Andrea Jenkins (Ward 8) and Emily Koski (Ward 11) have decided not to run for reelection. 

Voters will also cast ballots for members of the Board of Estimate and Taxation, as well as for the park board.

Early voting is scheduled to start on Sept. 19. Election day is Nov. 4.
