BCA identifies men killed, Fargo officers involved in Moorhead shooting

Law enforcement investigators have identified the two men killed and three officers involved in the shooting at a Moorhead apartment on Monday night.
According to authorities, police had shot and killed the men while responding to a report of domestic violence and after encountering gunfire.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the use of force by Fargo police officers Sgt. Michael Anderson, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen and Tyler Seehusen. They were assisting Moorhead police as part of the multi-jurisdictional Red River Valley SWAT Team. Their experience in law enforcement ranges between eight to 12 years.
The Fargo Police Department placed the officers on critical incident leave.

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the men killed in the shooting as 41-year-old Lucas Heiberg of Grand Forks, N.D., and 42-year-old Nathan Heiberg of Moorhead.
According to the preliminary investigation, the shooting happened as Moorhead police were responding to a report of a domestic assault and order for protection violation just before 9 p.m Monday. A woman told officers Nathan and Lucas Heiberg had physically assaulted her at an apartment building on the 2400 block of Third Avenue North. Two children were also inside the apartment.
On arrival, Moorhead police said the Heibergs did not respond to communication. Officers tried to force the apartment door open and a firearm was discharged from inside the residence, according to police.
Officers report they retreated, called for backup and evacuated nearby apartments.
Later, SWAT officers entered the apartment and “shots were fired,” fatally striking both Nathan and Lucas Heiberg, according to the BCA. No one else suffered injuries.
First responders provided medical aid. Lucas Heiberg was pronounced dead at the apartment and Nathan Heiberg died shortly after being transported to a hospital, according to the BCA.
The BCA reports recovering two firearms in the apartment and body-worn cameras recorded portions of the incident.
The BCA will present its findings to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for review.
