Man killed in Maplewood hit-and-run crash; suspect arrested

Maplewood police say a man died after a hit-and-run crash in the city early Friday morning. A suspect was arrested later in the day.

It happened at about 4:30 a.m. near the corner of Maryland Avenue and Lakewood Drive.

Officers responding to reports of a person down in the roadway found an injured 31-year-old man, later identified as Abdul Bakr Jafar. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

Maplewood police said a witness reported seeing a large conversion van with a ladder rack near the victim, that then left the scene. Investigators also obtained vehicle information and surveillance footage from a nearby residence.

Later Friday, KARE 11 reported that authorities located the suspect vehicle in Sleepy Eye, and a 46-year-old man was arrested. The suspect remained in the Ramsey County Jail on Saturday pending charges of criminal vehicular homicide.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with the investigation.
