Police in White Bear Lake say they’re continuing to investigate after a man reportedly used fake documents to enroll as a high school student.

In an update late Wednesday afternoon, police said the man is 22 years old and is being held at the Washington County Jail on charges from an unrelated case.

“The White Bear Lake Police Department is actively investigating this case in close partnership with the White Bear Lake Area School District staff, who have been fully cooperative,” police officials said in the update. “While no charges have been filed at this time, our investigators are pursuing possible criminal violations related to fraud, forgery, and unlawful conduct involving interactions with minors.”

Adult reportedly faked identity to enroll at White Bear Lake Area High School

The police department said Wednesday that it could not release further information “to preserve the integrity of the investigation.”

Police said they were notified about the situation by staff at White Bear Lake Area High School on Monday evening. At the time, the man was already in custody on the unrelated charges.

In a message to high school students and families 

, Principal Russell Reetz wrote that school officials “determined that while enrolling this individual we followed our enrollment process, which is as rigorous as state law allows. The individual appears to have provided fraudulent documentation and a false identity to enroll.”

The White Bear Lake school district requires prospective students to have a birth certificate or other recognized verification of birth date.
