Plans to build a Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame are moving forward, with organizers announcing Wednesday that they’ve picked a site in Inver Grove Heights.

The 40-acre property is located along Interstate 494 at Argenta Trail, just east of the Minnesota Vikings training facility.

Plans call for a 30,000-square-foot museum with a great hall and five exhibit wings. The planned facility will also include an ice rink, a 20,000-square-foot performance venue, and a hockey-themed restaurant and taproom. 

Organizers have said the project will cost about $70 million. It’s set to break ground next year, with a target opening date in late 2028. 

“Since announcing this legacy project in August, the outpouring of support from players past and present, Minnesota-based companies, and hockey fans statewide has been overwhelming,” Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame CEO — and Minnesota hockey legend — Natalie Darwitz said in a news release. “We’re truly excited to build our permanent home in Inver Grove Heights, honoring the past and inspiring the future of Minnesota hockey.”

Hall of Fame officials said the Inver Grove Heights property’s central location and accessibility were a draw. The site is located adjacent to a 

 along I-494, between the existing Dodd Road and Robert Trail exits.

Inver Grove Heights Mayor Brenda Dietrich said in a statement that the northwest part of the city “has long been envisioned for major development, and the Hall of Fame offers the opportunity for new amenities and attractions that will benefit Inver Grove Heights for years to come.”

The project is a partnership between the nonprofit hall of fame organization, and Bloomington-based Consumer Science North, a private development company.

The facility will be dedicated to hockey heritage specifically in Minnesota, as well as “advancing the sport through grassroots programming, traveling exhibits, and statewide youth education initiatives,” organizers said.
