Minneapolis union president calls for 'economic blackout' in protest of ICE actions

In an interview with NPR's Leila Fadel, Chelsie Glaubitz Gabiou, president of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL CIO, explained why the organization is supporting Friday's economic blackout aimed at protesting actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“Today is about coming together in solidarity and pulling all of our collective muscle together to say this has to stop,” Glaubitz Gabiou told Fadel, describing the unified effort across workplaces and communities.
She stressed that the demonstration is intended to send a message far beyond city or state borders.
“It is a message that is beyond Minneapolis, that is beyond the state of Minnesota. It is a message where our entire country has to take this very seriously, and we all need to work together to make what is happening in our community and this occupation of our community and other communities stop immediately.”
Organizers say the blackout is expected to draw participation from workers, families, and allies calling for an end to what they describe as destabilizing enforcement actions.
