Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon is rejecting a request from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to turn over confidential voter data.

 in the Minnesota immigration operation, some dealing closely with the situation and one with much looser connection. 

One of those requests sought access to Minnesota’s voter rolls — including sensitive personal information — despite ongoing litigation over the issue.

Secretary Simon answered with a hard no. 

Speaking on MPR News, Simon said the Justice Department has already sued Minnesota and other states for the same data, and courts in several states have dismissed those claims. He said tying the request to recent violence and unrest in Minnesota makes little sense.

“To tie this somehow to the tragedy around us — the bloodshed, the violence, the anguish that Minnesotans are going through — is something I just can’t explain,” said Simon.

Simon says his office has formally responded, declining to provide the data unless a court orders it.
