Minnesota loves to boast about its proud hockey tradition.
This weekend, it was on display as about 2,000 players representing 250 teams participated in the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship at Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis.
Pond Hockey Commissioner Scott Crowder says pond hockey is a little different than typical indoor hockey.
“The whole kind of structure is different,” he said. “I mean we play 4 on 4, there's no goalies, teams have a max roster size of 8, the rinks are smaller that we play with, the nets are smaller that we play with.”
Many of the teams had offbeat names like the all-orange Pylons, Alpuckas, Laser Loons, Sparkle Squad, 16-Bit Legends, and I’m Ron Burgandy?, a reference to the 2004 movie “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy” starring Will Ferrell.
A Thursday evening welcome party was cancelled due to dangerous wind chills. So were Friday games. But teams hit the ice for games on Saturday and Sunday.
In past years, the championships have attracted around 20,000 spectators.
