President Donald Trump said Monday morning that he’s sending his “border czar,” Tom Homan, to Minnesota, in the wake of Saturday’s fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by a federal agent in Minneapolis.

The White House said Homan “will be managing ICE operations on the ground in Minnesota.” It also said he will “coordinate with those leading investigations into the massive, widespread fraud that has resulted in billions of taxpayer dollars being stolen from law-abiding citizens in Minnesota.”

Homan is being sent to Minnesota on Monday night and will report directly to Trump, the president said in a social media post, adding that Homan is “tough but fair.”

“He has not been involved in that area, but knows and likes many of the people there,” Trump said Monday morning.

The move comes amid escalating tensions between local and state officials and the federal government amid the ongoing surge of federal agents to Minnesota, and following three shootings — two of them fatal — of people by federal agents in Minneapolis.
