The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association is asking for a meeting with President Donald Trump amid the ongoing surge of federal agents in the state.

In a statement Sunday, the state police chiefs group said “communities across our state are experiencing heightened stress and uncertainty, placing significant demands on our communities and the public safety agencies that serve them. Law enforcement professionals are being asked to operate in complex, high-pressure environments while communities seek reassurance, clarity, and stability.”

“In light of these challenges, the MCPA has requested a meeting with President Trump to discuss these issues directly and to share the perspectives of Minnesota’s law enforcement leaders.”

The group said it wants greater dialogue between state and federal officials to find “a constructive path forward.”

There have been mounting tensions between Minnesota officials and the White House over the federal operation — and in particular over the investigations into shootings involving federal agents in Minnesota. The state 

 from taking part in those investigations, including for the fatal shootings of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti.

Also on Sunday, Minnesota’s largest union representing law enforcement officers called for an emergency summit of local, state and federal officials.

Law Enforcement Labor Services said it wants to establish clear, coordinated policies for immigration enforcement and detainers in the state.

“The lack of clarity, cooperation, communication and coordination between federal, state and local government is unsustainable,” the union’s executive director, Jim Mortenson, said in a statement. “Conflicting directives are creating confusion for local law enforcement officers, eroding public trust, and straining public safety. While immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, its impact is felt daily by state and local agencies and the citizens of Minnesota.”

The union said local and state law enforcement agencies previously has a professional working relationship with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Border Patrol. The union said it’s important to “restore a functional relationship.”
