Border czar Tom Homan held meetings with top state and Minneapolis officials Tuesday and discussed their requests to change course after two months of a surge in immigration enforcement operations.
St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her said her office hasn't been in communication with the federal government, so she doesn't know how many agents will leave, nor how ICE's presence in the city will change.
“We have to remain vigilant, because we have seen from this administration that sometimes, a lot of times, the what is being said doesn't match what's actually happening on the ground, and so we have to remain cautiously optimistic,” Her said.
Meanwhile, she said she's heard reports of around 7,000 to 8,000 children in the city opting to attend school remotely amidst a surge in immigration enforcement operations. “There's nothing that replaces the ability to be in a classroom and to be learning together, and to see the number of students opting tells me that there is still more work to be done and that families are still afraid,” Her told Minnesota Now
Gov. Tim Walz said in a statement that in his meeting with Homan, the two agreed to remain in communication and that he asked Homan to significantly reduce the amount of federal forces in Minnesota.
