Customs and Border Protection confirmed on Wednesday that two officers who shot U.S. citizen Alex Pretti in Minneapolis over the weekend have been put on leave.
"The two officers involved are on administrative leave. This is standard protocol," a CBP spokesperson told NPR.
The announcement comes after CBP's initial review, reported on Tuesday, found that the officers shot Pretti after he resisted their efforts to take him into custody.
The agency's preliminary assessment contradicted the Trump administration's first narrative about the shooting, which accused Pretti of "domestic terrorism" and "brandishing his weapon."
It's not immediately clear how long the officers' leave would last.
CBP is investigating the shooting, and so are state officials, while it's also under review by the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general's office.
