Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week” with anchor George Stephanopoulos, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said the Trump administration will appeal a federal judge’s decision to release Liam Conejo Ramos and his father from the ICE detention facility in Texas.
Blanche also disputed the family’s account that they had followed the legal process in seeking asylum.
“There’s a very meaningful dispute about whether they had properly applied for asylum,“ Blanche said, adding, “I cannot get into the specifics.”
Blanche went on to tell Stephanopoulos, “There is a schism in the law right now about whether an illegal alien can be held pending their proceeding, or whether they need to be released on bail. We very strongly believe that they should be held.”
Blanche said appellate courts and possibly even the Supreme Court will need to weigh in on this question.
