Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said her office did not change any policies to provide Immigration and Customs officials more access to the county jail in exchange for the end of the monthslong federal immigration enforcement surge.
“Our policies did not change,” she told reporters Friday, adding that she was not pressured to make a change in conversations with Tom Homan, the White House official who took control of the crackdown.
“Was I asked? Absolutely,” she added. “My job is to do what's best for Hennepin County and the people who put me into this office, but also making sure that humanity always comes first."
Witt said her deputies will remain outside the Whipple Federal Building near Ft. Snelling as long as there are still protests held there.
