Canada beats U.S. for bronze medal in women's curling at the Winter Olympics

Top-ranked Canada beat the United States for the bronze medal in women’s curling at the Winter Olympics on Saturday, denying the American women their first medal in the event.

Canada won 10-7 after being upset by Sweden in the semifinals.

Sweden will play Switzerland for gold on Sunday.

In Saturday’s game, the U.S. led 3-2 at the midway point. But Canada scored three points in the sixth and eighth ends. The Americans climbed back to within a point entering the 10th and final end — but the Canadians scored two points to secure the bronze.

The U.S. team is made up of Minnesotans: Taylor Anderson-Heide, Tabitha Peterson, Tara Peterson and Cory Thiesse, along with alternate Aileen Geving.

While the women’s team did not medal, Thiesse and partner Korey Dropkin claimed the silver medal in mixed doubles curling earlier in the Olympics — making Thiesse the first U.S. women’s curler to earn an Olympic medal.
