A federal judge in Minnesota has blocked a new Trump administration policy that would have allowed immigration officials to arrest and detain thousands of legally admitted refugees.
U.S. District Judge John Tunheim issued a preliminary injunction Friday, calling the policy a dramatic shift that could turn refugees’ “American Dream into a dystopian nightmare.”
The administration’s plan, known as Operation PARRIS, would have allowed the detention of refugees who have not yet been designated permanent residents.
Tunheim ruled the policy likely violates federal law and the Constitution, including due process and Fourth Amendment protections. He also found no evidence that the refugees involved pose national security threats.
The order temporarily stops the arrests and detentions in Minnesota while the case moves forward.
