Warroad and Moorhead captured titles at Saturday’s high school boys hockey state tournament, the second straight year Northern Minnesota has won both championships.
Both the Class A and AA championship games needed overtime to crown a victor.
In Class A, Warroad senior forward Mooney Shaugabay scored in overtime to give Warroad a 5-4 win over Hibbing/Chisholm/VCA. It’s the Warroad boys’ first state title since 2005.
In Class AA, the defending champion Moorhead Spuds rallied from three goals down in the third period to force overtime. Junior forward Evan Wanner hit the late goal in the second overtime period to beat the Minnetonka Skippers 5-4.
The Spuds are the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Hermantown Hawks in the 2016-17 Class A tournament.
