“20 years ago we woke up to a big snowstorm. I needed to get to the Minnesota Oncology Clinic that morning because I was dying of acute myelogenous leukemia and needed to have a stem cell transplant. I had already taken a lethal dose of chemo to prepare for the transplant. My wife called the City of Mahtomedi to ask that they send a snow plow to get us to a main road. Of my medical team, one nurse was able to make it into the clinic, my doctor and the other nurse were snowed in and did not make it.
When I was diagnosed with AML in November of 2005, I was told that I had a 25 percent chance of 5-year survival, and that the average patient lived 8 weeks. So 20 years is a big deal to me and my family! I wish to thank the City of Mahtomedi and my medical team at Minnesota Oncology for giving me a re-birthday and a second chance at life!”
