Officials with the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan school district canceled classes Tuesday after several schools in the district received threatening voicemail messages.

The threats “were first discovered at 3:30 a.m. this morning. District officials contacted law enforcement, who began investigating immediately,” the district — also known as District 196 — 

Eagan police said in a statement that its investigators “are actively working with neighboring law enforcement agencies and the school district to determine the origin and nature of these threats. At this time, we are unable to confirm the threats as credible, nor have we been able to rule them out entirely.”

The district said it decided to cancel classes Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution.”

“We appreciate your understanding and support as we prioritize safety,” district officials said.

In addition to classes being canceled for students, the district said employees should not report to work on Tuesday. 

Authorities did not provide more details on the nature of the threats, but said more information would be released later in the day. In an update just before 7 a.m., Eagan police said the investigation “is in its early stages.”

The district asked anyone with information about the threats to contact Eagan police at 651-675-5700.

The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan district serves nearly 30,000 students and is among the largest in Minnesota. It has 20 elementary schools, six middle schools, four high schools and several other educational facilities.
