2 dead in separate boating incidents in Minnesota

Two people died in separate boating incidents in Minnesota on Tuesday — one in Crow Wing County, and the other in St. Louis County.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said a boat crash on the west side of Lake Vermilion just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday caused “numerous” people to be thrown into the cold water of the lake.

One person — identified as Jeremy Brandon Johnson, 53, of Eveleth — died at the scene. Three other people were taken to hospitals, including one person who was airlifted to Duluth.

Authorities have not released further details on the crash. The incident remains under investigation.

Earlier Tuesday in Crow Wing County, a 19-year-old man died after a paddleboat capsized on Little Emily Lake.

Authorities said the man — later identified as Cameron Walker — called 911 at about 12:30 p.m.

“The caller reported that he and two adult females were in the water when the call was unexpectedly disconnected,” the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The two women — ages 20 and 22 — made it to shore; one was treated for exposure from the cold water.

Dive team members recovered Walker’s body from about 23 feet of water, just before 3 p.m.

Walker and the two women were visiting the area from Morris, Minn., where they were attending college.

“Several lake residents also assisted with rescue efforts, and the sheriff’s office extends its appreciation for their timely and helpful response,” the sheriff’s office reported. “Please keep the families of all involved in your prayers as they go through this very difficult traumatic time.”
