A suspect is in custody after Hennepin County sheriff’s deputies were fired on Tuesday while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in south Minneapolis.
Authorities evacuated an apartment building and closed streets in the area of West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue after a 31-year-old male suspect barricaded himself inside the building. He allegedly fired multiple rounds from the building over several hours, including shooting down a police drone.
The man has past convictions related to drugs and firearms. State corrections officials said he was wanted for failing to maintain contact with his supervision agent.
Negotiators with the Minneapolis Police Department made contact via phone with the suspect, and after a nearly eight-hour standoff and a long negotiation, the man surrendered and was taken into custody.

Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said during a news conference that a woman and child — who are known to the suspect — had initially also been inside the apartment. Both were able to evacuate with help from law enforcement. The suspect also reportedly said he had an explosive device, though none was used and authorities didn’t report finding one as of Tuesday night.
Witt also said no law enforcement officers fired shots during the response.
“Throughout this incredibly dangerous situation… where the suspect repeatedly shot at law enforcement, no law enforcement personnel discharged a firearm for hours,” Witt said. “This could have ended up much differently.”
She said there were no reports of physical injuries to civilians or law enforcement.
The suspect is being held at the Hennepin County Jail.
