Changes coming for drivers on Interstate 394 starting Wednesday

The season-long construction project along Interstate 394 in Minneapolis moves to a new phase this week — with changes in store for drivers starting Wednesday.
It’s all part of an two-year, $67 million Minnesota Department of Transportation project to repair more than two dozen bridges and ramps along I-394 between downtown Minneapolis and Highway 100.
Since February, traffic on I-394 heading west from downtown Minneapolis has been reduced to two lanes — using the E-ZPass carpool lanes. Traffic heading toward downtown has stayed in its usual three lanes.
That will reverse this week.

Starting Wednesday, the main three westbound lanes will reopen. And it will be eastbound traffic moving to the two E-ZPass lanes through November.
That means there are still no dedicated E-ZPass carpool lanes or tolls for either direction of travel on I-394 through the fall.
Some new ramp closures also take effect on Wednesday, including the eastbound I-394 ramp to westbound I-94, and the ramps from Cedar Lake Road and Xenia Avenue/Park Place Boulevard to eastbound I-394.
The ramp from westbound I-94 to westbound I-394 will fully reopen.
The overall bridge and ramp maintenance project started in July 2025 and is set to be complete this fall.
