State and federal officials are briefed reporters at 1 p.m. on the state of battling wildland fires in northeastern Minnesota.

Recent rain has helped the fight but evacuation orders and wilderness closures remain in place on the Fernberg and Echo Trail roads near Ely. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness remains closed through at least Friday.

Officials offered some hopeful news Tuesday around the Little Knife fire, which has burned several thousand acres about 10 miles from the end of the Gunflint Trail. 

“By and large, this fire is looking really good, but we can't turn our back on it,” Jason Loomis, an incident commander with a federal wildfire management team, told a public meeting Tuesday in Lutsen.

While conditions have eased in recent days, the fire is burrowing deeper below ground where it may linger and remain a threat until winter, he added.
