Crews rescue driver after vehicle lands upside down in Rochester river

A person was rescued from a vehicle that drove through a guardrail and landed upside down in the Zumbro River in Rochester on Thursday night.

The Rochester Fire Department said the crash happened just before 11:30 p.m. along Broadway Avenue South at Sixth Street.

First responders found “a vehicle that had left the roadway, knocked over the guardrail and landed upside down in 2-3 feet of water in the river,” the fire department said in a news release.

The driver was still in the vehicle and talking. Crews used a ladder to climb down about 20 feet to the riverbank.

“The driver’s condition allowed for them to be walked through the water to the bike path/ramp on the opposite side of the river where they were further assessed,” the fire department reported.

There was no immediate update on their condition or the cause of the crash. The vehicle was lifted out of the river.
