As wildfires in and outside of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness continue into their third weekend, fire officials hope for more rain and wider access to the BWCA next week, but threats linger as temperatures start to heat up again turning extreme on Saturday. 

On Friday, officials from the U.S. Forest Service will give updates on the ongoing firefighting efforts in a livestreamed press conference. 

Rainfall has helped slow wildfire activity in northeastern Minnesota, but officials caution that additional rain will be needed to keep fire behavior in check.

More than 1,000 firefighters from as far away as Alaska, Florida, California and New Mexico are now on the ground in northeast Minnesota, helping in the fight to contain several large wildfires that have scorched more than 100 square miles of forest in and around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

Also among the firefighters are crews from neighboring fire departments in northern Minnesota who have come to aid in the effort to protect hundreds of homes, cabins and resorts that could be in the path of the wildfires
