A person was wounded in what St. Paul police are calling an officer-involved shooting Monday morning outside Regions Hospital.

Officers were searching for a suspect in a domestic assault downtown. That person was believed to be armed.

Officers located the person at about 9:30 a.m. on East 12th Street, outside the hospital, “where the encounter resulted in a shooting involving St. Paul police,” according to the department’s initial account. “Officers immediately rendered aid to the suspect, who’s currently being treated at Regions Hospital. No officers were injured.”

The initial police statement did not say who fired a gun and did not provide further details on what led to the shooting. The name of the person who was wounded has not been released.

Police said there’s no ongoing threat to the public, and the department has asked the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to handle the investigation.
