A person was wounded after St. Paul police said he pointed what appeared to be a handgun at officers outside Regions Hospital Monday morning. An officer shot the man, leading to non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Officers were dispatched at about 9:15 a.m. to the 400 block of Temperance Avenue on a report of a domestic assault, St. Paul police Sgt. Scott Sandell said at a Monday afternoon news conference. Police were told the suspect had fled on foot and was armed with a firearm.
Officers located the person at about 9:30 a.m. on East 12th Street, outside the hospital, “where the encounter resulted in a shooting involving St. Paul police,” according to the department’s initial account.
Sandell said St. Paul officers and Ramsey County sheriff’s deputies located the man near the intersection of East 12th Street and Jackson Street. He said the man again fled on foot, then pulled what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at officers. A St. Paul police officer fired his department-issued weapon, striking the man in the hand and back, Sandell said.

Sandell said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening. No officers or bystanders were injured.
The name of the person who was wounded has not been released.
Sandell said officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras and that the footage has been turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Officers directly involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, which Sandell said is standard procedure following a critical incident.
Police said there’s no ongoing threat to the public, and the department has asked the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to handle the investigation.
St. Paul police’s Family Violence Unit will separately investigate the reported domestic assault, Sandell said.
