The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the St. Paul police officer who shot a man on Monday outside Regions Hospital.

The bureau said in a Friday news release officer Jacob Pederson has 12 years in law enforcement and is currently on leave. According to its preliminary investigation, Pederson opened fire because he thought Tayshawn Brown-Roberts, 21, brandished a handgun during an arrest.

Police told investigators Brown-Roberts ran from officers as they responded to a domestic assault call on Temperance Street. Officers said they were told Brown-Roberts was armed.

When officers found Brown-Roberts shortly after on 12th Street near the hospital, he tried running again and pulled what “appeared to be a handgun from a handbag.” The bureau said Pederson shot Brown-Roberts “at one point.”

Investigators did not find a handgun, but did collect a Glock replica BB gun from the shooting site.

St. Paul police Sgt. Scott Sandell said the day of the shooting Brown-Robert’s wounds were not life threatening. He was treated for injuries at Regions Hospital.

As of Saturday afternoon, Brown-Roberts was in the Ramsey County jail on several domestic violence charges.
