BCA IDs St. Paul police officer who shot man outside Regions Hospital

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the St. Paul police officer who shot a man on Monday outside Regions Hospital.
The BCA said in a Friday news release that officer Jacob Pederson has 12 years of law enforcement experience and is currently on leave. According to its preliminary investigation, Pederson opened fire because he thought Tayshawn Brown-Roberts, 21, brandished a handgun during an arrest.
Police told investigators that Brown-Roberts ran from officers as they responded to a domestic assault call on Temperance Street. Officers said they were told Brown-Roberts was armed.
When officers found Brown-Roberts shortly after on 12th Street near the hospital, he tried running again and pulled what “appeared to be a handgun from a handbag.” The BCA said Pederson shot Brown-Roberts “at one point.”

Investigators did not find a handgun, but did collect a Glock replica BB gun from the shooting site.
St. Paul police Sgt. Scott Sandell said the day of the shooting Brown-Robert’s wounds were not life-threatening. He was treated for injuries at Regions Hospital.
As of Saturday afternoon, Brown-Roberts was in the Ramsey County jail on several domestic violence charges.
That criminal complaint also contains an account of the shooting. Ramsey County prosecutors allege Brown-Roberts pointed what appeared to be gun toward an officer, who took cover in some bushes.
Brown-Roberts allegedly also aimed the gun at his own head, turned toward another officer and then fell to the ground behind some trees, apparently after being shot, prosecutors said. Officers said they found Brown-Roberts with gunshot wounds in his arms.
