Two people were aboard a small plane that crashed Sunday afternoon as it took off from the city airport in Buffalo, Minn., northwest of the Twin Cities. There’s been no official word on their condition. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
In an initial statement, the Federal Aviation Administration said a replica Piper PA18 crashed while departing Buffalo Municipal Airport at about 4:20 p.m.
The FAA said the single-engine aircraft went down shortly after takeoff. The Buffalo Police Department confirmed that its officers and Buffalo firefighters responded to the scene.
Photos from the scene on Sunday showed the aircraft wreckage on the airport tarmac, partially covered with a tarp.
