The charges allege Makayla Lee Craig filled out enrollment paperwork claiming to be a 17-year-old. School staff in Maple Grove alerted police, who say Craig never completed enrollment and was never on campus as a student.

Authorities have charged a 29-year-old with three counts of forgery for allegedly trying to enroll as a student at Maple Grove High School.

Prosecutors allege Makayla Lee Craig filled out paperwork claiming to be a 17-year-old named Molly Fox. The criminal complaint said Craig is a registered sex offender from Oregon, who has been out of compliance for the past year.

Maple Grove police said Craig never completed enrollment at Maple Grove and was never on campus or in online classes as a student after school staff raised concerns about the application and contacted police.

The department in a statement credited school district staff “for their alertness with the incident, quick action to notify a school resource officer, and collaboration in the investigation.”

Craig was arrested earlier this week, and remained in the Hennepin County Jail on Friday morning ahead of an initial court appearance.

According to the criminal complaint:

A person claiming to be a homeless 17-year-old named Molly Fox, with no identification documents, attempted to enroll at Maple Grove High School. The person completed enrollment paperwork and “was insistent on immediate enrollment.”

The person — allegedly Craig — told school staff “that they looked older than 17, so the staff would not seem concerned when they met.” They also talked about “being concerned about being mistaken for Makayla Ray Craig, who is a registered sex offender out of Oregon.”

School staff contacted police. Craig reportedly told officers that their name was Molly Fox, that they had never attended school, and they wanted to start school after finding sobriety.

Maple Grove police referred to Craig as male, while court documents use they/them pronouns.

News reports and court records from Oregon show a person with the same full name and birth year was convicted on charges for claiming to be 15 years old and attempting to enroll in a high school in that state in 2024.

The new charges in Minnesota come just over a year after a separate case in which a 22-year-old man allegedly used a false identity to enroll as a student at White Bear Lake Area High School.

The man — identified as Kelvin Luebke — reportedly enrolled as a 17-year-old under a different name, and attended classes for about a month before police were contacted. He was charged earlier this year with three felony counts of forgery.
