Democrat Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, who used her own upbringing to connect with voters feeling financially strapped, made history Tuesday by winning a U.S. Senate seat, beating former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya.

She’s the first person of color to win a Minnesota Senate seat and will be the first Native American woman to be a senator.
