Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced members of her transition team Wednesday and outlined her agenda as she prepares to become Minnesota’s governor in January. Between now and then, Klobuchar will need to decide who will be part of her administration.
“There are 61 days before my administration begins,” Klobuchar said. “Being governor will be a marathon, but this will be a sprint. Every single day will count.”
Klobuchar announced that former Minnesota Human Services Commissioner Cindy Jesson will chair her 14-member transition team, which includes her former chief of staff, others who worked for her in Washington and people she worked with when she served as Hennepin County attorney.
The team also includes people in the health policy sector, which could signal that Klobuchar is planning to make big changes in agencies that oversee social services and are wrapped up in Minnesota’s fraud scandal.
Klobuchar sidestepped questions about when she will resign from the Senate and who may be appointed in her place. But she seemed to signal that she, not current Gov. Tim Walz, will make the decision. According to state law, Minnesota’s governor appoints someone to fill a U.S. Senate seat where there is a vacancy.
“I just won the election last night and I will be very careful in that decision,” she said of a Senate successor. “I will do right by the state of Minnesota with that person.”
