Periods of rain on Saturday, but Sunday is looking dry

Is it going to be a rainy weekend? I’d have a “Plan B” for any outdoor activities on Saturday, but Sunday should be mostly dry.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm could move into southwestern Minnesota Friday evening. Periods of rain are likely overnight Friday night and into Saturday across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with a thunderstorm also possible. By Saturday afternoon, the steadiest rains may be mainly in the northern half of Minnesota, with scattered showers to the south.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's North American Mesoscale forecast model shows the potential rain pattern Friday evening through Saturday evening:

Some areas could see one inch or more of rain from Friday night through Saturday.

Updated weather information can be heard on the MPR network, and you’ll also see updated weather info on the MPR News live weather blog.

Sunday looks mostly dry, with an isolated afternoon sprinkle possible.

Friday highs will be mainly in the 50s across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, with some 40s in north-central and northeastern Minnesota.

Highs in the 50s will be widespread on Saturday, with some lower 60s possible in the far south:

Some spots in the Twin Cities metro area could touch 60 late Saturday afternoon. Sunday highs will be in the 50s again, with some 60s in the far south:

The metro area has another shot at 60 on Sunday. Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 60s Monday, followed by mid-60s Tuesday, upper 60s Wednesday and upper 50s on Thursday

Autumn clouds

On average, we see 55 percent of possible sunshine in the Twin Cities metro area during October:

Our sunniest month of the year in the Twin Cities is July, with 72 percent of possible sunshine between sunrise and sunset. Our cloudiest month is November, with an average of only 39 percent of possible sunshine.

Dry southeast

It was a very wet September across most of Minnesota and western Wisconsin, but southeastern portions of the U.S. have been much drier than normal:

Many areas to the southeast are in drought:

Fall colors

Leaf peepers won’t have to travel very far (or at all) to see some great fall colors this weekend. Here’s the latest fall color report from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources:

Keep in mind that the fall color report includes all deciduous trees, not just maples. A Wisconsin fall color report is also available.
