On March 16, 2017, author P. Carl sent a photo of himself to his wife in a text with this message: “I’m me now.” It was the point, he writes in his memoir “Becoming a Man: The Story of a Transition,” that he felt visible for the first time after living more than 50 years as a girl and queer woman.

Carl’s transition to a man happened during a period of change for America: the months following the announcement of the Trump administration’s travel ban and before #MeToo dominated our social media sites and conversations. It also took place during a time when there’s both advancement and a lack of understanding about transgender people and their bodies. He joins host Kerri Miller for a candid conversation about his journey and about gender, masculinity and inequality in the United States.
