What could a civil rights investigation uncover?

On Tuesday, Gov. Tim Walz announced the Minnesota Department of Human Rights will launch an investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department for possible civil rights violations. The investigation, which comes in the wake of George Floyd’s killing, will look back at 10 years of department policies and practices.

Human Rights Commissioner Rebecca Lucero said the goal is systemwide change. But will that be the result? On Thursday, MPR News host Kerri Miller spoke with to a professor who studies civil rights complaints against police and a former St. Paul police chief about the obstacles and hopes of the investigation.
