How China is exerting its global power

The Chinese government last week quietly passed a new national security law aimed at curbing dissent in Hong Kong. The consequences were rapid. Ten people were arrested shortly after the law went into effect, including a 15-year-old girl. 

The Chinese government says the law is meant to protect Hong Kong’s political and financial future, but critics are skeptical. One law professor described the situation to the New York Times as a “takeover” of Hong Kong.

At 9 a.m. on Wednesday, two experts joined MPR News host Kerri Miller for a conversation about China’s role in the changing global power structure.
