Crews in northeast Minnesota are fighting 3 rapidly-growing wildfires

Crews in northeast Minnesota are fighting three wildfires, two of which have grown to hundreds of acres in size. Low humidity and high winds caused a fast-growing wildfire about 40 miles north of Duluth to nearly triple in size. Gov. Tim Walz has authorized the Minnesota National Guard to help fire crews fight the blaze. The Camp House and Jenkins Creek fires have now burned more than 2,000 acres. Lake County authorities began more evacuations Monday night in an area threatened by a third fire.

Meanwhile, an air quality alert goes back into effect Tuesday for most of Minnesota as the combination of hot, dry weather and pollution cause elevated amounts of ground-level ozone.

A federal program that helps 125,000 Minnesotans pay their energy bills could be facing cuts. The Trump administration’s proposed budget would eliminate the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Minnesota gets more than $100 million a year from the program.

Leaders in Minnesota’s faith community are pressing state lawmakers not to cut health coverage for people in the country without proper documentation. The state began offering MinnesotaCare coverage to those immigrants this year. Republicans want to end the program, arguing it’s an improper use of state tax dollars.
