International student released from ICE custody. Crews make rapid progress on wildfires

A University of Minnesota student held in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody since late March is out of detention Thursday.

Doğukan Günaydın had been held in the Sherburne County Jail after being arrested by federal immigration authorities. A federal judge ruled this week that his detention violated his procedural due process rights under the Fifth Amendment and ordered his release.

After a nearly two-week-long battle, crews are now making rapid progress containing two wildfires burning in northern Minnesota. The Camp House Fire, which destroyed about 150 structures near Brimson, is now 90 percent contained. Meanwhile, the larger Jenkins Fire — burning in more remote country east of Hoyt Lakes — is now 32 percent contained.

Legislative leaders say several budget bills are close to completion. But close does not mean finished. A working Memorial Day weekend is being used to pressure lawmakers to get those bills done.

Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy says leaders are hoping to have a special session next week to pass a new, two-year budget. That can't happen until bills are finalized.

In weather, meteorologist Sven Sundgaard said Memorial Day weekend is looking decent.

“It’s not going to be hot. You're not going to want to jump in the lake. But it’s mostly going to be dry for us. Best chance of a few spotty showers will be southwestern Minnesota, maybe an isolated shower Memorial Day. But otherwise, it’s looking pretty quiet.”

The weekend will start off in the 60s and warm up to 70 degrees by Sunday.
