With the beginning of July, new laws take effect across Minnesota, including one that’s likely to startle a few drivers. The law now allows motorcyclists to split lanes to maneuver through traffic in certain situations.
The Minnesota Court of Appeals has ruled a former Minneapolis police officer may move forward with his defamation lawsuit against the city’s police chief.
New biometric facial scanning has begun at the Twin Cities airport airport for US citizens returning from abroad. The formal name of the technology is Enhanced Passenger Processing. It’s a U.S. Customs and Border Protection initiative aimed at speeding up border security screening. Passengers can opt-out of the screening and have an officer review their credentials in-person.
The head of the Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights is leaving after serving less than a year on the job. City officials say Michelle Phillips will stay in the position until mid-August, before moving back to Oakland, Calif. to serve as the Assistant City Administrator. Before coming to Minneapolis, Phillips had served for about two years as Oakland’s inaugural inspector general where she monitored law enforcement practices.

Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul soon will be the Grand Casino Arena. Minnesota Sports and Entertainment and Grand Casino announced the partnership yesterday. The arena has been known as the Xcel Energy Center, or the “X,” since it opened when the Minnesota Wild franchise first began in 2000.
