Jury selected in criminal trial of state Sen. Nicole Mitchell. Air quality alert for central and northern Minnesota

A jury has been seated in the criminal trial of Democratic state Sen. Nicole Mitchell. Mitchell, a first-term Democrat from Woodbury, allegedly broke into the home of her stepmother, who has Alzheimer’s, to retrieve her deceased father’s ashes.

The Advisory Committee on Capitol Area Security is expected to meet soon to discuss changes that could improve safety at the multibuilding complex. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan leads the committee. She says the panel will consider new security measures in the wake of the shootings of two lawmakers and their spouses.

Immigrant rights advocates rallied Monday outside Fort Snelling Immigration Court to raise concerns about ICE arrests.

A boil water advisory for the cities of Crystal, Golden Valley and New Hope has been lifted. Officials had taken the precautionary measure after a temporary drop in water pressure over the weekend increased the risk of contamination. Tests Monday showed the water is safe to drink.

Traffic along Interstate 90 in Austin will be detoured overnight as crews pour concrete for a bridge deck over the freeway. That closure will affect both directions of I-90 in southern Minnesota from 8 p.m. Tuesday through about 6 a.m. Wednesday. The detour will take traffic on state and county roads.

An air quality alert is in effect for central and northern Minnesota until 11 p.m. Tuesday. Another round of heavy surface smoke from Canadian wildfires is expected to move into northern Minnesota with the highest concentrations expected around Lake Superior.
