A Hennepin County grand jury has returned a first-degree premeditated murder indictment against the man suspected of killing former DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark. Vance Boelter is expected to face trial in federal court first.
The state indictment also charges Boelter with the attempted first-degree murder of DFL State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette — who were shot and wounded — and their daughter Hope, who was with them but not physically injured.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says Boelter is also charged with the attempted murder of DFL State Rep. Kristen Bahner, even though she wasn’t home. Boelter is also charged with impersonating a police officer and felony animal cruelty for the shooting of the Hortmans’ dog Gilbert.
A Minnesota state senator has been arrested on suspicion of DWI for the second time since 2022. Maplewood DFL Sen. Tou Xiong was booked at the Ramsey County Jail around 4 a.m. Thursday and released within a few hours. Xiong pleaded guilty to DWI in 2022 when he was a member of the Minnesota House. He became a state senator in 2023.

The state Office of Cannabis Management has issued its first licenses to recreational cannabis dispensaries in the Twin Cities. The three non-tribal retailers with licenses are In Dispensary in Minneapolis, Lucky Strains in New Brighton and Fridley Dispensary in Fridley. All are microbusinesses with a retail endorsement, meaning they can only operate one retail location. So far, 15 microbusinesses across the state have licenses and the majority of them are for cultivation operations.
If you need to travel between Minneapolis and St. Paul this weekend — you won’t be able to use Interstate 94. Westbound I-94 will be closed between I-35E and I-35W. Eastbound I-94 will be closed between I-35W and Highway 280. The closures start Friday at 10 p.m. and run through early Monday. Traffic will be detoured to Highway 36.
Starting Saturday, Metro Transit will offer more local and bus rapid transit service. The changes are part of the agency's Network Now framework to improve service each quarter into 2027.
Gov. Tim Walz has authorized emergency assistance for northwest and west-central Minnesota after severe weather in June. The governor's office says storms damaged infrastructure, caused power outages and downed hundreds of thousands of trees across Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Hubbard, Mahnomen, Norman and Todd counties.
