Immigration and Customs Enforcement is reportedly eyeing a property in western Minnesota for a new detention center. The now-shuttered Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton is named in an ICE document obtained by the Washington Post, which outlines a plan to expand immigration detention beds nationwide.
Appleton’s city administrator told MPR News the city is not in communication with ICE, nor does it have a contract with the agency, but that Prairie Correctional owner CoreCivic is “aggressively pursuing” a deal with ICE. CoreCivic confirmed it is exploring opportunities for the facility. ICE told the Washington Post that the plan is preliminary and has not yet been approved.
The Minnesota State Investment Board is defending itself against charges made by Pro-Palestinian advocates who say the board has been postponing and canceling its quarterly meetings to prevent public comment.
The Minneapolis Public Housing Authority broke ground on a new $78 million affordable housing project in northeast Minneapolis Tuesday. The agency calls it the largest housing redevelopment in city history. It includes renovations to the current building, and a new, four-story complex just next door. The project is expected to be completed by late 2026.
