Thousands of people gathered at vigils last night to remember and pray for the victims of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in Minneapolis. Two children were killed and 17 others were injured in the shooting, which happened during a morning Mass marking the first week of school. The shooter was outside and shot through a church window.
Police identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said law enforcement officers executed search warrants at the church and three nearby residences related to the suspected shooter. FBI Director Kash Patel says federal agencies are investigating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics. Some of the victims of the shooting who were wounded remain hospitalized.
Before the shooting at the church, Minneapolis police were investigating three other fatal shootings in the city. One of those left a man dead and six other people injured near 29th and Clinton. Two people are now in custody in connection with that shooting but police say the suspected shooter remains at large. There’s also been an arrest in a fatal shooting Tuesday night at 27th and Third. No arrests are reported in the third fatal shooting, early yesterday along Hennepin Avenue downtown.
Authorities in north-central Minnesota say a woman died Tuesday on a boat that crashed on Leech Lake. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says it happened near the city park in Walker. Callers reported a pontoon boat had run onto rocks along the shore. The only occupant of the boat, a 59-year-old woman from Cass Lake, was found unresponsive, and later died. An autopsy was planned.
