Vice President JD Vance plans to visit Minneapolis Wednesday. The plans were announced in a statement released by the White House Tuesday night. The Vice President will pay respects to victims of the Annunciation Catholic Church shooting. He's expected to hold a series of private meetings with families affected by the shooting.
The mayors of Minneapolis, St. Paul and several suburban cities are asking the state Legislature to ban assault-style weapons or give cities more power to impose their own limitations. Several mayors were at the State Capitol Tuesday calling for lawmakers to step up, or relax a law that stops cities from enacting tougher gun ordinances than the state.
Republican Rep. Paul Novotny says city-by-city ordinances would intrude on gun rights based on where a person lives and would be on shaky legal constitutional ground. Gov. Tim Walz is considering calling a special session following the mass shooting at Annunciation Church and School in Minneapolis.
A gun was found in a student’s possession on the first day of class Tuesday at Johnson High School in St. Paul. In a letter to families, school officials say they were alerted the student may have had a weapon. Staff searched the student and a gun was found. The school says its safety protocols worked as intended. The student was taken into custody.

The start of classes in the Wabasha-Kellogg public school is on hold while cleaning crews work to address a mold problem. The southeastern Minnesota district recently discovered mold in some elementary school classrooms. Remediation is under way, but it’s not clear when that work will be done and classes can begin.
Minneapolis police are searching for a suspect in a shooting Tuesday on the city's south side that left a 32-year-old man dead. Chief Brian O'Hara says it happened along Chicago Avenue near Lake Street and stemmed from argument between two men at a bus shelter. The shooting happened on the heels of investigations of three shootings last week and the attack on Annunciation Catholic Church.
Wednesday’s shooting was the 42nd homicide of 2025 in Minneapolis. At this time last year, the city had reported 51 homicides.
Two alleged accomplices to one of the fatal shootings last week are in custody and facing charges. Police have yet to arrest the suspected shooter.
Minneapolis restaurant Diane’s Place has been named the 2025 Restaurant of the Year by Food & Wine magazine. Chef Diane Moua opened the Hmong American restaurant in April 2024. Earlier this year, Moua was a finalist for the James Beard Award for Best Chef in the Midwest.
