A 16-year-old is facing charges after he allegedly brought a loaded handgun to his St. Paul high school this week.
Employees on strike at the University of Minnesota say the school has wielded a heavy-handed response to picketing. Custodians and food service workers started picketing on the Twin Cities campus Wednesday and they attempted to block some trucks from making deliveries. Police stepped in to disperse picketers and ticketed several people. Union representatives say one picketer was hospitalized with a head injury after police pushed her to the ground.
Immigrant rights activists in Minneapolis are rallying Friday to call on federal prosecutors to drop charges against an artist and organizer arrested at a protest earlier this summer.
Lane closures may cause major traffic delays along Interstate 94 in the northwest Twin Cities metro this weekend. The Minnesota Department of Transportation says the freeway will be down to a single lane in each direction between the I-494 interchange in Maple Grove and Highway 101 in Rogers. Lane closures start at 10 p.m. Friday and run through 5 a.m. Monday. Also in the north metro, traffic on Highway 10 will be impacted by construction. Traffic will be down to a single lane in each direction as crews work near the Round Lake Boulevard bridge in Coon Rapids.

The Minneapolis City Council has approved renaming 14 blocks of a street near the Mississippi River for a prominent Black woman lawyer. The street will be renamed Lena Smith Boulevard. Smith served as president of the Minneapolis NAACP and represented a Black family who faced housing discrimination. The street is currently named Edmund Boulevard for Edmund Walton who introduced racially restrictive covenants on properties in the early 1900s. Council member Aurin Chowdhury sponsored the name change.
